GIFTS AID PORTSMOUTH RECOVERY Keynsham Devs travelled South to the John Jenkins Stadium for the second time this season, this time to face high flying Portsmouth. Portsmouth started strongly - with Keynsham having to dig deep - the tempo was so high that a few passes went astray from both teams with players struggling to control simple balls, quickly under pressure. Keynsham started to warm to their task - Zoe & Maddie with a nice pass into Alice - her forward pass almost found its way to Jenna, via a deflection, but Portsmouth defend well for a corner - which was the cleared. Portsmouth had a good chance, which they lobbed over, after a defensive Keynsham header off balance had fallen favourably goal-wards for them. Mandy was starting to size up her victims and made a superb recovery tackle after Portsmouth broke thru and tried to square for a tap in. Keynsham had a positive moment in the game, which saw Alice and Jenna almost wriggle free. Zoe Jessie & Maddie were battling hard in the midfield area. Portsmouth almost took the lead when Keynsham struggled to clear and Chloe was forced into a great save with her feet at the near post, before making another great save from a Portsmouth header from the corner. Portsmouth had a period on top, where Chloe made another good stop. Megan led a charge but her left foot cross was just a bit too close to the keeper. Mandy H with another superb challenge which saw the ball go out for a goal kick! Tilly was looking composed and confident bringing the ball out from the back, but her options needed to be better. Keynsham weathered another storm, before Alice made a great charge forward, which then saw Megan force an error for a corner, Maddie corner was well met by Zoe - but a defensive body blocked her effort! Keynsham were now well and truly in this and giving as good as they got. Zoe’s superb cross field pass saw Alice try and work an opening but Portsmouth defended well. Jenna almost latched onto a pass forward, but Portsmouth again defended well. A great interchange by the midfield 3 - saw Jessie and Maddie work the ball to Alice but Pompey again got numbers back. Megan fired high and over. Lily T freekick saw Portsmouth clear for a corner- Maddies low corner went thru everyone and was cleared.. Portsmouth seemed a tad ruffled as the game was now very much in the balance. Portsmouth almost scored - but Ella (in particularly) Chloe, Mandy & Tilly did enough to shepherd the ball wide of the goal. Keynsham looked like they fancied this - Megan and Jenna led a great charge - but Keynsham were a tad guilty of rushing the final pass and lost the ball. Keynsham continued to take the game to Portsmouth and Megan from distance with a freekick saw the keeper forced into a save. Maddie’s corner was partially cleared to Jessie who took a nice touch inside and fired into the bottom corner (0-1) If Portsmouth weren’t rattled before, they were now! Alice superb driving run saw her almost find a second. 36 mins had passed in a flash - everyone had worked so hard. Fresh legs arrived, Erin, Milly, Nicky, Jess & Angel for Maddie, Meg, Ella, Tilly & Jenna. Portsmouth hit the bar with a fierce strike as Keynsham adjusted to their changes. Lily cross saw the defender just reach a header and the keeper confused whether she could pick it up, which meant a Keynsham corner- Nicky’s corner caused panic but Portsmouth cleared. Mandy another superb challenge takes out a Pompey Player and Lily (her own!) - she helped Lily up tho! Angel W almost found Erin with a lovely pass, before Portsmouth made a great break with a fantastic pass but shot wide. Alice great shield saw Nicky use her box of Zidane tricks and send Erin racing forward, but Portsmouth defended well again. HT: PORTSMOUTH DEVS 0 vs KEYNSHAM DEVS 1 Keynsham had been superb, going toe to toe with one of the strongest teams in the division. Sure. There had been a few scary moments, but Keynsham had shown more than enough that they could get something out of this game! Portsmouth start on the front foot - Chloe with a fantastic save to deny a good long range effort. Keynsham defend the corner. Keynsham work a neat little interchange out, which sees Nicky with a superb cross field pass out for Jess to stretch her legs - Jess finds Jessie - but Portsmouth did well in numbers and the attack breaks down. Another brilliant charge by several Keynsham players - finishing with Lily and Jess finding Erin - who sets back to Jessie - she finds Nicky, whose fierce strike is spilled and Jess almost follows up, but Portsmouth somehow cleared. Jessie needed attention after a bad challenge - Mark almost gets booked for entering the pitch (as physio) without the referee waving him on (initially waved away, Mark is then called onto the pitch - in what sadly turns out to the be first of several weird decisions by the referee!) Portsmouth get themselves in a right mess - as the keeper picks up a back pass - indirect freekick. Jessie’s freekick from Nicky’s layoff was well blocked. Just past the hour mark and with Portsmouth getting more and more frustrated - Keynsham are again the victim of another dubious penalty decision, which changes the context of the game. Portsmouth break - the winger takes a heavy touch and Chloe and Lily collide whilst trying to intercept. The winger recycles the ball and her cross with Chloe still getting back to her goal, goes over Milly - bounces and brushes Alice’s hand whilst going wide of the goal. Keynsham clear and suddenly the break is on with Erin 1v1 against a defender. The referee halts play (some 10+ seconds after the incident) and signals for a penalty - seemingly listening to the moans and groans of a desperate team knowing that they wouldn’t otherwise score. The Portsmouth striker fluffs her penalty with Chloe making a great save - then betters that with a superb save to stop the follow up - sadly Keynsham’s players are too busy applauding her efforts - and a third follow up was slammed into the corner. (1-1) The referee is full of strange decisions now as Jessie attempts to chest the ball down, she is blatantly shoved in the back and in being thrown forward the ball hits her arm. A freekick to Portsmouth on the edge his decision! - which is blazed high and wide and lands in Southampton. Portsmouth are sensing a turn in their fortunes and score again on the counter. (2-1) - when Keynsham over commit forward. Keynsham aren’t giving this up without a fight - another great Nicky strike is spilled and Portsmouth are lucky to clear. 65 mins (Subs - Megan & Ella for Alice and Jessie.) Chloe makes another fantastic save as Portsmouth threaten a third. 68 mins (Subs - Maddie, Tilly & Jenna for Mandy, Zoe & Lily T) Keynsham are looking good on the counter. 20 left - there is still time. Angel almost finds Jenna with another great pass. Keynsham are still in this and Portsmouth look far from comfortable. Maddie’s great pass - sees Jenna battle brilliantly to win the race with the defender, she cuts in and smashes an effort at goal, which the keeper does well to turn wide. Maddie’s corner is eventually cleared. The game is getting stretched as both teams are understandably tiring. Keynsham still believe and are still battling and looking to counter. As the game enters its final moments - Portsmouth score again when an awkward shot is saved by Chloe but the ball falls nicely for a Portsmouth player to fire into the bottom corner. (3-1) Keynsham are showing a never say die attitude and Maddie feeds Jenna, who twists and turns and forces a corner - Maddie’s fantastic corner sees Jenna shot cleared off the line. Keynsham finish strongly - but sadly return home with no points for their efforts. FT: PORTSMOUTH DEVS 3 vs KEYNSHAM DEVS 1 |

POINTS SHARED. Keynsham Devs welcomed Swindon Town to the AJN stadium hoping to build on their victory last time out (albeit 2 weeks ago!) against Exeter City. It was a fairly even & bright start by both teams. The opening exchanges saw Liv putting herself about - Lily R had a shot blocked by a Keynsham player, whilst Swindon had a shot wide and Liv almost capitalised on a defensive mix up. Angel W & Jess B were busy - whilst the midfield 3 of Loz, Nicky & Lily R were battling hard in the middle - Liv challenged for a ball and sent a shot narrowly wide. Swindon were seeing more of the ball, but the better chances were Keynsham’s - Angel with a great pinch and shot, which just stuck under her feet. Liv forced a corner, Lily great delivery which saw Jess B almost connect at the far post. 18 mins - just when Keynsham are growing to their task, Swindon took the league after Keynsham failed to clear their lines and the dangerous no.44 shot bounced awkwardly in front of Chloe. (0-1) Swindon were gaining momentum and Chloe J denied them with a good save after they had broken through. Mandy & Zoe were alert to thwart two bits of danger, Mandy with a trademark challenge and Zoe with a great interception. Keynsham are still posing their own problems and Liv almost finds an equaliser with a long range effort that the keeper does well to stretch to reach. Keynsham are starting to string some nice passing together - with Lily R, Nicky, Loz, Angel & Lily T involved in one such move. 31 - subs - Jenna, Meg, Martha, Lainey & Tilly for Jess, Angel, Lily T, Milly & Nicky. Martha superb pass just evades Zoe, Jenna and the goalie, and goes narrowly wide. Liv & Jenna lead a break but Swindon get numbers back to clear. At the other end, Swindon fashion a chance and fire over. Loz soft handball - gives Swindon a freekick high up the pitch, but Swindon shoot well wide. HT: KEYNSHAM TOWN LADIES DEVS 0 vs SWINDON DEVS 1 The game was there for the taking - but in truth, both teams were struggling to find quality and some passing being quite sloppy. Swindon’s winger had the first chance of the second half which Chloe saved at her near post. Keynsham’s first chance of the half soon followed, Lily R stole a nice pinch & her nutmeg pass to Liv - saw the latter release Jenna with a superb thru ball - Jenna race goal-ward but shot narrowly off target. Jenna & Liv good combination play again, before Jenna showed great hold up play and found Zoe, who twisted and turned the last defender and sent in a great shot, which the keeper did well to save. Keynsham were creating good chances - Meg won the ball high up the pitch and looked to shoot, but slipped and fell. 57 mins - Angel W for Zoe HG, whose toe nail was hanging off. Jenna fired in another great strike, before a brilliant run involving Meg and Jenna couldn’t quite find Liv with the pass. 62 subs - Nicky, Jess, Milly & Lily T returned for Lily R, Liv, Loz and Mandy. There was a break in play after a coming together, when a player decided to run into Chloe and obvs came off worse. Chloe was forced into a great save after Keynsham had got themselves into trouble. Swindon were trying to get the second goal - Chloe made another great save - before Tilly and Lainey were called into defensive action to make timely challenges. Jenna was getting closer and she fired just over with another fierce strike. Swindon were still trying to counter and Milly mopped up with some good defending. Lily T great release saw Jenna superbly hold off the defender but could only flash a shot wide off balance - chances were coming, but sadly going for Keynsham! Nicky superb left foot pass was just too far ahead of Lily T. Keynsham weren’t panicked and continued to press forward. Meg with some great play and pass saw Lily T race clear but her strike found the keeper. Jenna broke down the wing and her superb cutback setup Angel (who’d watched too many Man Utd games this season) so fired over! Nicky lovely feet & release saw Angel shoot from distance. Time was now running out and it was just starting to feel like it wouldn’t be Keynsham’s day. With the game now deep into stoppage time - Meg make a superb lung busting run forward to try and get on Jenna’s pass - her presence was enough for Swindon to give the ball to Angel who fed Nicky - Nicky is 25-30 yards from goal and smashes an absolute thunderbolt left footer high over the keeper into the net! (1-1) - the bench go wild. Keynsham have their point and the referee soon sounds his whistle. FT: KEYNSHAM TOWN LADIES DEVS 1 vs SWINDON DEVS 1 |

EXETER DOWNED BY CLINICAL KEYNSHAM KEYNSHAM DEVS returned to League action and welcomed Exeter City Reserves to the AJN stadium. Keynsham started with Chloe J in goal - Ella G, Mandy H, Tilly K and Martha H in defence. Zoe HG CDM with Meg B and Angel W in the more advanced midfield roles. Brooke S and Alice T flanked Jenna B in attack. Loz, Maddie, Jess, Erin & Milly waited patiently on the bench. Exeter started on the front foot but Keynsham defended well - Mandy with a superb trade mark challenge was the pick of the opening exchanges. At the other end, Keynsham opened Exeter up when Angel W freed Jenna B, but after seemingly composing herself superbly - she steered her shot narrowly off target. A huge let off for Exeter. Keynsham were battling well, whilst Exeter dominated possession, but were finding Keynsham superbly compact and hard to break through. The counter attack looked on for Keynsham. Meg B with a fantastic outside of the foot pass, saw the defender almost cut it out, but Jenna B won the footrace with the keeper and almost walked the ball in to give Keynsham an early lead! (1-0) Chloe was forced into a good save by her front post, as Exeter looked to make a quick response. Zoe HG great pass saw Brooke almost get on the end and then almost cut the keepers clearance out. Exeter were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous area, but Chloe produced a fantastic save to tip the effort wide! Exeter with their best chance to date as a great cross is well defended by Ella who just gets her body across a player, so she could only steer an effort wide. Keynsham defence was solid and were ably helped by their forward players. A bit of controversy - as Brooke won a freekick out wide, Ella’s excellent freekick then sees Brooke steer home, the ref gives the goal, the Lino flags offside. Very close! The game is well posed. Frantic, high tempo and energy with both teams trying to play football. Martha is dealing superbly well (aided by Alice T) with Exeters main threat down the RW. Angel W great steal sees Brooke force a corner. 26 mins. Ella’s corner - is superbly flicked goal-wards by Angel W and crosses the line after hitting the inside of the post (2-0) Keynsham really have the bit between their teeth now and a superb pinch by Megan B and driving run forward, saw her smash in a brilliant left foot finish!! (3-0) Tilly is shot by a sniper (as she takes a tumble with nobody around her)! Alice T great pass saw Jenna B break, but she was well challenged by the defender. Alice T superb tracking back wins the ball in the full back position - she plays it to Martha who sends a great pass forward to Jenna, who still has lots to do, she cuts in, beats one, drops the shoulder, beats another and fires high into the net!! (4-0) Four quickly becomes FIVE, as Keynsham are rampant with their clinical finishing! Jenna turns provider with a great pass through and Brooke’s lobbed cross nestles in the top corner!!! (5-0) The game is being played at such a high tempo. Exeter to their credit haven’t given this one up yet and a really good cross - sees Chloe get a touch to divert it for a corner - which she then claims! Exeter fire in a fierce strike, Chloe produces another fantastic save to maintain her clean sheet and thwart Exeter once more. 36 mins - 5 subs - Loz, Maddie, Jess, Erin & Milly for Jenna, Angel, Meg, Ella & Alice. Both team are still battling hard - the game remains a frantic pace. Half time can’t come quickly enough for the supporters to find a breath. HT: KEYNSHAM DEVS 5 vs EXETER CITY RES 0 The half time team talk centred around more of the same and to expect (and match) a fast start from Exeter. Brooke forces an early corner - after a quick Milly throw. Keynsham are really compact and Exeter, whilst seeing a lot of possession, are struggling to break through and create any meaningful chances. A Mandy challenge sees Exeter win a corner. Another Exeter corner sees a player fire narrowly wide of the target - with a load of bodies on the line. Exeter have started strong - but Keynsham are weathering well and posing a problem on the break. Brooke leads a good charge which saw Maddie, Erin and Loz almost find an opening for a shot. Zoe brilliant win and pass to Maddie, who then threads a lovely pass through, which Brooke forces the defender to clear for a corner. Zoe another great pinch - before Loz did the same and releases Brooke, whose cross was just cleared in front of Maddie. Almost a GOAL OF THE SEASON CONTENDER, when Maddie releases Erin who races down the wing - and her cross saw Maddie flick the ball back to Loz who fired in a fantastic volley from 30+ yards - which the keeper did well to flick wide! Changes 68 mins - Brooke, Mandy, Tilly, Martha & Zoe HG for the returning Alice T, Jenna, Meg B, Angel W & Ella G. Loz with another superb challenge and pinch - Maddie releases Jenna who, with a hat trick in her sights, just lobs wide of the target with the keeper having no chance. Jenna superb cross saw Jess B surely clatter in the penalty area, but nothing given - Maddie almost recycled, but Exeter clear. Jenna B another wriggle free and run - before the defender made a superb challenge, but pulling Jenna back by the arm, but again nothing given. Exeter are still valiantly trying - but Keynsham are creating by far the better chances. Lovely football by Keynsham - Alice and Jenna combine to see Maddie fire a shot just off target. Exeter win a dangerous freekick just outside the area by the corner flag - after Meg is deemed too strong - a great cross is headed wide by an Exeter player. Keynsham are seeing this out very well indeed and another counter almost sees Maddie break through, before Jess B fires narrowly off target from distance. The ref blows his final whistle & Keynsham get their first 3 points of the season, with a fantastic team performance, which was both COMPACT in defence and CLINICAL in attack! DEVS WIN FRIENDLY AGAINST UNI! Keynsham Devs hosted Bristol University in an entertaining game played in a first half torrential storm, that meant I couldn’t make my normal notes! Both teams started well, in ridiculous rain, with Bristol University perhaps better opponents than we had initially expected. Keynsham had debutant Morgan H to thank for keeping the scores level with a couple of smart saves. Bristol Uni took the lead with 12 mins on the clock - when a Keynsham clearance on the byline dropped nicely for their player to steer the ball past Morgan from close range. (0-1) Keynsham were starting to grow into the game - Jenna almost fashioned an opening, but the Bristol Uni defender made a superb recovery tackle. Nicky saw a shot blocked, before Jenna fired narrowly off target. Milly H Lainey B Tilly K & Martha H had to be on their toes and alert to Bristol Unis counter-attacks. Keynsham drew level when Maddie’s great cross was slotted home by Jess B (with her first goal for the club) on the opposite wing! (1-1) Both keepers traded saves, before Bristol Uni took the lead again - after Keynsham struggled to clear a corner and the ball was hooked back into a dangerous area for a player to nod over Morgan H. (1-2) Again Keynsham had to show spirit and character and that duly came moments later when Jess B free-kick saw Loz out muscle the University’s back line and smash past the keeper (2-2) Keynsham freshened up on 32 mins - with Alice T, Meg B, Ella G & Jessie A all joining the action for Maddie I, Angel W, Tilly K & Martha H. Jessie A threatened another thunderbolt from distance. Before Jenna and Alice T combined to see the latter fire narrowly over the bar! HT : KEYNSHAM DEVS 2 Vs BRISTOL UNI 2 Fortunately the rain cleared and the second half was mostly played in a low sun but with dry conditions aside from the odd fine rain downpour. Keynsham had renewed energy and started to take the game to Bristol Uni. Alice T went close with a great strike on the half volley - which was well saved by the visiting keeper. Keynsham took the lead when Nicky H pounced on a loose ball in the area, after Jessie A header from a corner had not been cleared, to fire past the keeper. (3-2) Alice T and Jess B were causing problems on the flanks. Jenna & Alice were having their own personal battle with the University defence and keeper, who made several great saves to deny them and saw several shots well blocked. Nicky H went close again. Bristol Uni pegged Keynsham back to draw level when Keynsham failed to deal with another corner and a player stood practically on the goal line managed to flick the ball past Morgan. (3-3) Keynsham for the most had looked pretty comfortable at the back second half, with Morgan brilliantly moping up any time Bristol Uni almost got thru. 62 mins - Nicky H, Loz, Jess & Lainey B for the returning quartet of Maddie I, Martha H, Angel W & Tilly K. Meg moved forward - with Maddie I in CAM. Maddie and Angel traded superb passes forward - breaking thru the BU defence - Jenna went close twice, but was again thwarted by the BU keeper and after showing superb pace to create an opening saw her effort well blocked, after she’d brilliantly composed herself. Keynsham again found a way - Alice T’s brilliantly run saw her cut back and find Angel W who worked the ball into Maddie I on the edge of the area to fire a pile driver high into the net!! (4-3) 75 - Nicky H returned at CB for Milly H who had done superbly in her first minutes for 2 months. Keynsham finished strongly - Maddie saw another effort blocked, as did Angel. Meg B and Alice T were causing problems out wide and Bristol Uni’s threat was well nullified. A hilarious moment saw Meg adjudged to have fouled a player that tried to body her and found Meg simply too strong! - it didn’t matter - Keynsham ran out worthy winners.
